Luxury Wardrobe Essentials

If given the opportunity, luxury wardrobe essentials should occupy prime real estate in your closet. Whether it’s a fancy shoe, investment coat, or a hand-crafted bag, luxurious pieces can add class and sophistication to an otherwise basic wardrobe.

Obviously, though, luxury doesn't come cheap.  That's why it's important to be strategic about what items you splurge on. Use the list below as a tool to guide you while planning your luxury wardrobe wish list.

Structured Bag

A structured bag, like the Eartha Iconic Mini-Satchel from Zac Zac Posen, is a great go-to piece. As fun and funky as slouchy totes, envelope clutches, and backpacks can be, nothing says sophistication and longevity like a structured bag. To increase the number of outfits you can wear your structure bag with, opt for a neutral color in a fairly streamlined silhouette.

Trench Coat

Flip through old magazines, turn on a vintage film, or rummage through your grandmother's closet, and chances are the trench coat style will be abundantly present. To keep your look modern, search for a trench coat with a twist. The Hanne Trench Coat from Club Monaco is a great pick. This piece features a relaxed silhouette with exaggerated lapels and an elegant drape, making it a good fit for the office as well as a girl's night.

Neutral Pump

A neutral pump can take you from the board room to the bar. Shoes, like the Lovisa Suede Pump from Alexander Wang, can add the finishing touch to a number of outfits. Look for beautifully crafted pumps with strong arch support in black, brown, navy, nude, or olive. Then, wear them with everything you own.

Classic Necklace

The 14K Connected Necklace from AuRate New York features two silky strands of gold chains that look chic over a sweater, collar, or a basic T-shirt. Classic necklaces, like the piece from AuRate, are great luxury wardrobe additions. They can easily and subtly add a touch of bling to even the simplest outfits.

Two words: Turtleneck hair. Aside from contributing to one of the biggest hair trends of the last year, a turtleneck is a classic. Whether you go for a simple black turtleneck or more unique style, like a Ribbed Turtleneck from J.Crew, there's a lot of options for styling the top. For example, pair your piece with dark-wash jeans for a more laid back look, or do a half-tuck into a pair of slouchy trousers for a fun office look.

Pencil Skirt

Much like turtlenecks, a pencil skirt is one of those luxury wardrobe pieces that is effortless but still put together. The Altuzarra Matisse Skirt, for example, can easily be dressed up or down. A black pencil skirt, obviously, is always a great buy. However, a skirt in coal gray, navy, or even white, during the warmer months, can also look nice.

There's a reason Anna Wintour wears shades indoors. Along with offering much-needed protection from bright rays, sunglasses ooze "cool." Look for a classic style, like an aviator or wayfarer, for everyday wear. A large, funky pair, like the Marni Acetate Sunglasses, can be great for more adventurous fashion days.

Black Dress

Whether it’s a mini, shift, or maxi style, a black dress is always a great luxury wardrobe item. Specifically, the Cashmere V-Midi dress from Everlane, which specializes in craftsmanship and quality, is simple, put together, and comfortable. Style your selection with booties, a blanket scarf, and cropped jacket for a more casual outing. Pretty heels, jewels, and a red lip can transition your piece to a nighttime look.
