Start A Side Hustle
This is one of my favorite ways to test out a new career move, especially if you’re an entrepreneur, but it can be useful no matter what you do. When you realize that what you’re doing no longer challenges or interests you, try out something new by starting a little side hustle. Take on a few side projects in areas that are interesting to you.
These projects don’t have to be too big for you to get a good idea if you want to make this area your next career move. Ask for a new assignment at work to dip your toe in the water or offer to do something new for a client. This is an amazing way to see if you want to do more of something.
Go Back to Your Childhood
There are so many things we enjoyed as children, that we forgot about because we were so busy trying to get into a good college and get our first job. If you have no idea what you want to do and you’re seeing warning signs that it’s time to change your career, this is a great place to start.
Think back to your childhood interests. How did you spend your time? What called out to you? What you learn from your childhood might not be straightforward, but you can connect what you did then to your personality. Say you wanted to be a singer or a model, that could mean that you want to be in front of people. Consider something visible for your next career move.
Get creative here and connect with your authentic self. Our childhood was a time when we didn’t think we needed to change who we are. You just might have some fascinating insights about yourself.
Interview Your Role Models
Interested in being a stylist or project manager, but have no idea what it would be like? Find someone with that job and take them to lunch. It’s as simple as that.
We aren’t meant to have all the answers ourselves. Reach out to people who have the answers you’re looking for.
People are generally very happy to share more about what they do. Seek out someone you admire or someone who seems to be doing what you want to do and ask them about it. Get all the pros and cons. Pay attention to that person’s personality and see if that job could be a good fit for your next career move.
Learn Something New
Considering a career move that’s totally out of your comfort zone? Cut the self-doubt and learn more about it. Immerse yourself in books and blogs that will educate you about the area you’re interested in.
If you have 10 different things you’re considering for your next career move, this is a fantastic tip for you to try. It costs you nothing and worst case scenario you’ll find out quick what you don’t like.
All it takes is Google and your local library to learn something new about another industry or position. You can make an educated jump if you do your research.
Listen to Your Intuition
This one was a big part of my latest career evolution. It goes like this: pay attention to what’s calling you. What keeps coming up? While some of your ideas might sound a little crazy, if it keeps coming up, there’s something to it.
For months I had ideas about my next career move, but I would push it away as too hard or unnecessary. Listen to what’s getting your attention and be open to all the possibilities.
You can easily try out a new career move without jumping all in.
